Understanding the Sprinter Emissions System
Modern Mercedes Sprinters use several emissions control systems that work together:
DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter)
The DPF captures soot from the exhaust and periodically burns it off through a process called regeneration.
Over time, the filter can become clogged if regeneration doesn't complete successfully, leading to:
- Reduced power
- Poor fuel economy
- Regeneration failures
- Limp mode
- Expensive replacement costs
EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation)
The EGR valve recirculates exhaust gases back into the engine to reduce NOx emissions.
As mileage increases, carbon buildup can cause:

SCR / DEF (AdBlue) System

Mechanical Requirements
Once the modified ECU file is be installed, the vehicle must have the necessary mechanical modifications completed before driving it. Our tuning service only addresses the software calibration—it does not include any mechanical work or hardware.
The following vehicle preparation is required:
- The DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) must be hollowed out inside. Alternatively, the DPF can be removed and a straight pipe installed in its place.
- The EGR valve must be electrically disconnected.
- After the modified ECU file has been successfully written, the AdBlue/DEF control module must be disconnected.
- The upstream oxygen (lambda) sensor, located before the Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC), must remain installed and connected.
- The DPF differential pressure sensor, DPF exhaust gas temperature (EGT) sensors, and NOx sensors need to be unplugged after the software has been installed.
Important: This product includes ECU tuning and software modifications only. RPM Motorsport does not manufacture, sell, or supply any physical delete components, including downpipes, EGR delete kits, or related hardware. Customers are responsible for sourcing any required mechanical components separately.

Rather than continually replacing expensive emissions components, many off-road and racing vehicle owners choose ECU recalibration as part of a complete emissions-system modification.
Important: If your vehicle reaches 0 starts on the DEF countdown, the vehicle will go into limp mode and the dash will display the message "Starts Idle". This is known as "Idle Mode". If you have this message on the dash our tune will NOT clear it and the van will remain in limp mode.
How to clear Starts Idle mode (Adblue Reset)
If you have a "Starts Idle" or "Starts RE0" message on the dash, you must do a Adblue RESET using a Mercedes Diagnostic tool before you can write any tuning files.
- Follow these steps:
- Fill the DEF tank with DEF fluid
- Perform an Adblue RESET using a Mercedes Diagnostic tool
- Read and Clear the DTC fault codes in the ECU with a suitable diagnostic tool
- Turn the ignition on (but not starting the vehicle) to make sure the DEF icon and/or countdown message is gone
There are multiple tools that can do the Adblue Reset. A couple examples are "Launch Pro X431" or "Snap on Triton". There are also Autel tools and others that have this ability, which is usually under "special functions". Choose the option for "Adblue Module Reset" and follow the guided procedures. It will reset the system and the "Starts Idle" message will go away and the vehicle will be able to exceed 5 mph and rev up normally. In order for the Adblue Reset to be completed successfully you will need to make sure the DEF tank is full and it is reading 100% full. If this does not work then you may need Mercedes to reset it themselves.
